The deep roots of LowderStill run back to Duke University Circa 1980. Ted Van Dyk and John Teunis landed in a fusion band called Soundchaser , paying not so subtle homage to the bands Yes, Genesis, Santana, ELP, and Pink Floyd. The band was a regular feature on the Quad at Duke and at local clubs.

Going forward, Ted and John played in numerous cover and original bands, including Felix Cadillac and Three Blind Mice. Original material began to develop, and Felix Cadillac got some local airplay in 1985 around the Raleigh Durham area. The bands also served as opening acts for then-big groups including The Dixie Dregs, Stanley Clarke, and Rick Derringer.

Meanwhile, Kevin O’Neal had formed an original fusion group H2O with his colleague Ken Hardy in Houston in the 90s. Kevin also self-produced an album of original fusion guitar and played with a few local cover bands. After moving to the Raleigh Durham area, Kevin played with the cover band The Complications, also associated with Duke University, in the early 2000s.

In 2002, a chance meeting led to the formation of a band that would stand the test of time. Initially playing cover tunes under monikers like Five Finger Discount and Whammyfish, the members decided it was time to invest in working on original compositions that would bring a unique and progressive flavor to the local music scene. With the creation of “Captains of Industry” LowderStill brings years of experience with both cover and original music, blending jazz, rock, and fusion into a rich palette of challenging, yet listenable sounds.
