Open Mic FAQ

WHAT IS DEEP SOUTH THE BAR’S OPEN MIC NIGHT?

Open Mic Night is our weekly open mic competition.  Every Tuesday night we host an open mic, which has been ranked “Best In The Triangle” by Indy Week every year since 2010.  All performers are welcome – even full bands (backline is not provided at this time- but bands are welcome to bring their own) and of course we welcome solo performers, duos, acoustic acts, comedians, spoken word artists – anything!  We also have a full 88-key upright piano onstage for your use as well.

WHAT IS THE ATMOSPHERE/ENVIRONMENT LIKE?

We believe Deep South Open Mic Night has been so successful due to the incredibly welcoming, friendly, supportive, fun environment and people.  It’s a great community of artists and performers and fans, and our host Ryan Mullaney (and bartender Jessica and sound engineer Ernie) can’t wait to meet newcomers and welcome them to the bar!  So come on out – our friendly staff and regulars are looking forward to hearing your art!

WHEN IS DEEP SOUTH THE BAR’S OPEN MIC?

Every Tuesday night.  Doors open at 7pm, and the signup sheet goes out at 7:15pm on the dot (and usually fills up very fast).
Performances happen between 7:45pm and 11:30pm.  When signing up you choose your time slot, so you are always able to spread the word to friends/fans/family as to exactly when you’ll hit the stage.  You are not required to be present at the venue except to sign up, and to perform.  We ask that you please be on-site 30 minutes leading up to your scheduled set time, though. We ask that full bands be prepared to take the final slot of the night, if available – as setup/changeover time for bands is much longer.

WHAT IS THE COMPETITION ASPECT OF OPEN MIC NIGHT AND WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?

Our judges pick a weekly winner at the end of every Tuesday night, we notify the winning act within the week.  On The first Tuesday of the following month, the month’s weekly winners are invited back to compete for the monthly prize: a $25 gift card from Harry’s Guitar Shop and a finalist slot in the annual competition.  Every August, that year’s monthly winners compete in the finals for the grand prize of: $250 cash, paid performance on two high profile shows or festivals (booked by Deep South Entertainment) a co-writing session with Mike Garrigan of Two Egrets Media & Recording Studio, and an artist consultation with Deep South Entertainment. We also have a second place winner ($100 cash, paid performance on a high profile show or festival, and an artist consultation with Deep South Entertainment), and a third place winner ($50 cash, and a paid performance).

IS IT FREE TO ATTEND AND/OR PLAY OPEN MIC NIGHT?

Yes, absolutely.

IS OPEN MIC NIGHT ALL AGES?

Yes.  18+ can attend, and under 18 can attend with an adult.  All ages are welcome to perform.

HOW LONG DO I GET TO PERFORM?

At the moment, the set times are 15 minutes each, which is on average about 3 songs.  There are currently 16 performance slots per week.

DOES DEEP SOUTH THE BAR HAVE A PA?

Yes.  We are full-fledged mid-sized music venue with pro sound and equipment.  For Open Mic Night, we provide the full PA and soundperson, along with all necessary microphones, DI boxes, etc.  You can view full tech specs at the bottom of our booking page.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING FOR MY PERFORMANCE?

In general, whatever you want – and yourself!  If you play acoustic guitar, bring your guitar, instrument cable (if it’s acoustic/electric), tuner, picks – basically what you would need to perform in any other normal situation on your own.  If you are performing to tracks, you will need to provide an iPod/MP3 player or cd player to play your music on.  You do not need to bring microphones or PA gear – we’ve got you covered there.  We also allow full bands to set up, but you will need to bring your own amps, drums, etc.  We always have our 88-key upright piano on stage and available to you as well.

WHAT IS WEDNESDAY “OPEN MIC LIGHT”?

Open Mic Light is our new spinoff series on Wednesday nights.  Due to Tuesday night’s overwhelming success and popularity, we launched Open Mic Light on Wednesdays in February 2014.  All performers are welcome on Wednesdays, except full bands.  Wednesday is a more casual event, great for beginners or anyone wanting to perform on Wednesdays instead of (or in addition to) Tuesdays – solo artists, acoustic performers, duos, comedians, spoken word artists, pianists, etc.  Doors open at 7pm, signup sheet goes out immediately, first set is generally at 8pm.  Sets are 20 minutes long.  We feature our host Ernie Norment, who will determine a nightly winner along with 2 other judges – one winner every week will receive a $15 bar tab redeemable upon their next trip to the Deep South The Bar.
